"My type" has one the last three out of five presidential elections, and even losing the White House to Clinton, we picked up the House and Senate. "My type" has been winning governorships and legislatures across the country. Even supposing I am smug, it is not because there is so much to complain about, but so much to rejoice in.

On the subject of change, though: I come from a pretty traditional liberal Democratic family, what one might call a "Humphrey Household"; I worked in the McGovern campaign; the first vote I ever cast was for a Socialist; and I considered myself an anarcho-syndicalist (more or less a Wobblie) about the time I entered college. By the time I graduated college, in '78, I was a "neo-liberal", and by the time of the '80 election I decided to vote for Reagan, and henceforth became a "neoconservative". It took years before I changed my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, and I was busy thrashing out a number of issues to see if I would stay conservative. A number of people who had been tagged "neoconservatives" got sucked into supporting Clinton. I did not, among other reasons because it was obvious to me that he was smarmy, and that was pretty much the last chance the Democrats had with me. Everything that has happened subsequently has confirmed my views, so yeah, I have some, they are thought out, and I am pretty confident in them. I earned it, though. Now tell me, given how easily you discount others as being smug rigid ideologues, have you ever gone through comparable changes?
