OT: Fed Chairman

Lucius:

Maybe you can help me with something that I tried to research a while back and failed at. From what I know Greenspan took over from Volker in 1987. My questions: 1) Was this before or after the Oct 1987 stock market correction?, 2) Were there a series of interest rate hikes in 1987 and if so by how much and when?. Thanks for your help (or anyone else?s).

John Walsh

PS: In 1987 I was all in mutual funds. Besides the substandard return, something I really did not like about funds is their turnover rate meant that you were taxed on appreciation even if you had not sold. Yuk!

The economy and the Fed can hardly be off-topic. Even the strongest of companies cannot increase their earnings if their customers can no longer raise cash to buy, or if their customers' customers disappear.
Do you think this crazy volatile market is due to the fear over Greenspan's words?
Or something else?
Or nothing much?
