>>Question: Does anyone know the mechanics behind the index shares such as QQQ? What do the shares represent? Did Nasdaq buy shares of the index stocks and then turn around and resell shares of that pool?

Never mind. On the Nasdaq web site I find "When you purchase Nasdaq-100 Shares, you're investing in the Nasdaq-100 Trust, a unit investment trust that holds shares of the companies in the Nasdaq-100 Index."
