This SUN press release is amazing ! Instead of TRASH talking Intel and "dissing" the ITanium, SUN appears to have bowed under pressure from its customers and has "renewed" its dedication to support BOTH the IA64 and IA32 Intel architectures !!

Sun currently bundles Oracle8i Enterprise Database and Apache Web Server with Solaris, and will continue to do so with Solaris on Itanium, giving dot-com applications an extremely powerful transaction platform.

Sun plans to have the Solaris 8 operating environment ready to support the Itanium-based platforms when they become available. Solaris has already demonstrated success in early testing by being the first operating system to run on the Itanium simulator environment. Furthermore, in October, Solaris was able to successfully boot on an Itanium-based system at an Intel development lab.
Sun's strategy remains to leverage its 64-bit Solaris Operating Environment for Intel's IA-64 processor. The Solaris Application Programming Interface (API) and Device Driver Interface (DDI) are common across all Solaris platforms, meaning that ISVs that develop 64-bit applications today on Solaris (SPARC(TM) Platform Edition) can easily migrate these same applications to the Itanium platform by simply recompiling their application or driver. Additionally, Solaris 8 offers investment protection for applications on current IA-32 platforms that can run on tomorrow's IA-64 platforms without the need for recompiling or modification.
In addition, because of the Java(tm) platform's promise of ``Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM),' ISVs with products developed based upon Java technology can redeploy applications on different Solaris Operating Environment editions with a minimum of modifications.
Also, the Sun WorkShop(TM) development products provide a consistent software development environment across all platforms which utilize the Solaris Operating Environment, delivering constant reliability and ease-of-use for developers.
