No Merced software?

What do you call this?

This SUN press release is amazing ! Instead of TRASH talking Intel and "dissing" the ITanium, SUN appears to have bowed under pressure from its customers and has "renewed" its dedication to support BOTH the IA64 and IA32 Intel architectures !!

"In response to market demand for its free Solaris(TM) licensing programs and its OEMs reconfirming interest, Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) today reaffirmed its commitment to provide versions of its highly reliable, available and scalable Solaris Operating Environment for systems using Intel microprocessors.

Sun intends for the dotcom-grade Solaris Operating Environment to continue its support for Intel's current IA-32 platform-based processors and will extend support for the emerging IA-64 platform-based offerings, Itanium and beyond. Sun will bring its .com-grade operating environment to companies that choose Intel processors and want the reliability, availability and scalability that only Solaris software provides.

``Sun and Intel have OEM customers who have made a significant investment in Solaris as their operating environment for the IA-64 architecture. Sun is fully committed to working with Intel to ensure the success of our joint customers,' said Anil Gadre, Sun's Solaris Software vice president and general manager. ``The market is speaking clearly and strongly for free Solaris for Intel. Demand for our free Solaris on Intel program is high and our Solaris OEMs have reaffirmed to us their commitment to offer the Solaris Operating Environment on their IA-64-based systems.'"

Score 1 for Intel !!!

Sun Microsystems Reasserts Strategy of Providing the Solaris Operating Environment for Intel Processors

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to market demand for its free Solaris(TM) licensing programs and its OEMs reconfirming interest, Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) today reaffirmed its commitment to provide versions of its highly reliable, available and scalable Solaris Operating Environment for systems using Intel microprocessors.

Sun currently bundles Oracle8i Enterprise Database and Apache Web Server with Solaris, and will continue to do so with Solaris on Itanium, giving dot-com applications an extremely powerful transaction platform.

Demand for our free Solaris on Intel program is high and our Solaris OEMs have reaffirmed to us their commitment to offer the Solaris Operating Environment on their IA-64-based systems.'

``Data Warehousing is a key solution for NCR,' said Marty Seyer, Vice President of NCR's eBusiness Solutions Group. ``We have worked and continue to work very closely with Sun on Solaris for Intel to ensure that Solaris provides the high availability and data center reliability required for Teradata Data Warehousing Solutions on Intel's 64-bit platforms.'

``Fujitsu is fully committed to supporting Solaris on the Intel platform,' said Shu Hiraki, General Manager of Fujitsu Software Group. ``Solaris' numerous advanced features, including scalability and reliability, give us a competitive advantage in building enterprise-ready solutions.'

Sun plans to have the Solaris 8 operating environment ready to support the Itanium-based platforms when they become available. Solaris has already demonstrated success in early testing by being the first operating system to run on the Itanium simulator environment. Furthermore, in October, Solaris was able to successfully boot on an Itanium-based system at an Intel development lab.

Sun's strategy remains to leverage its 64-bit Solaris Operating Environment for Intel's IA-64 processor. The Solaris Application Programming Interface (API) and Device Driver Interface (DDI) are common across all Solaris platforms, meaning that ISVs that develop 64-bit applications today on Solaris (SPARC(TM) Platform Edition) can easily migrate these same applications to the Itanium platform by simply recompiling their application or driver. Additionally, Solaris 8 offers investment protection for applications on current IA-32 platforms that can run on tomorrow's IA-64 platforms without the need for recompiling or modification.

In addition, because of the Java(tm) platform's promise of ``Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM),' ISVs with products developed based upon Java technology can redeploy applications on different Solaris Operating Environment editions with a minimum of modifications.

Also, the Sun WorkShop(TM) development products provide a consistent software development environment across all platforms which utilize the Solaris Operating Environment, delivering constant reliability and ease-of-use for developers.
