Executive Summary

Bluetooth is the name given to a new point-to-multipoint, short range, radio frequency
connectivity technology. Ericsson originally developed it as a way of connecting mobile
phones to accessories without the need for cables or wires. Today the Special Interest Group
(SIG) comprises more than 1,200 companies in many different industries including
computing, telecommunications, networking, automotive, consumer electronics, military,
medical, industrial and others. The technology aims to offer easy, quick, reliable and secure
device to device connectivity at short range. It is also very low-cost, and this is why so many
different companies are interested in the technology.
This report will look at the major issues that this technology faces, and the implications it
will have on a number of different industries and companies. We have included forecasts of
total chip shipments and the revenues these will offer silicon vendors. We have also broken
the market down into nine different application industries:

* Mobile phones
* Mobile PCs
* Hand-held PCs
* Headsets
* Desktop computing (including peripherals)
* Automotive
* Consumer electronics
* Access points
* Other applications

We have also included add-on forecasts, the shipments for which are included in the above
figures. Add-ons have been broken down into PC cards, CompactFlash cards and USB
(Universal Serial Bus) adapters.
