( BW)(CT-DATAQUEST)(IT) GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says Consumer Market Helps Drive 30 Percent Growth in Latin America PC Industry; Year-end Results Show Mexico Surpassed Brazil as No. 1 Country for PC Shipments

Business Editors, Technology Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2000--Driven partially by sales into the home market, personal computer shipments in Latin American surpassed 4.6 million units in 1999, an increase of 30 percent over 1998 shipments, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). The consumer PC market grew 66 percent in Latin America in 1999, representing 33 percent of all PC shipments for the year.
Mexico became the No. 1 country in the region, as PC shipments were in excess of 1.4 million units, an increase of 65 percent over 1998 shipments. Brazil was the No. 2 country in the region with shipments totaling more than 1.3 million units, up 13 percent from 1998.
"Despite the conservative initial projections due to Brazil's January 100 percent devaluation and increase in interest rates, it has been a strong year for the PC industry in the region," said Luis Anavitarte, director for Dataquest's Latin America research. "While Brazil had a weak start, Mexico had its best year because of the NAFTA effect and the robust expansion of its consumer PC segment."
