I was speaking to a guy who is probably the most respected market (not stock) analyst when it comes to semiconductor materials. He's been doing this for 3 decades so he has a darned good knowledge of the players.

I asked him how much of a market there was in SiC wafers. He said tops $3million last year. Furthermore he said that it was all CREE. The others are a drop in the bucket and essentially couldn't ship anything until very late in the year. He's only looking at the semiconductor market so that suggests that the jewelry substrate market is roughly $7 mil if I remember the numbers correctly.

The other thing I learned is that SiC wafer production is now on the radar scope of Wacker Siltronic. They are I think #2 of the 5 major Si wafer manufacturers. I talked to the VP of Wacker who said they aren't currently producing any, but the recent device activities and the power/high temp device potentials have caused them to look at the technology.

That is interesting since the current market is extremely small relative to their current business. It would have to grow orders of magnitude to have offer any measurable growth potential. I interpretted this as meaning that they think the SiC wafer market is for real and will reach an interesting level in the near term (<3yrs).

Mark I've been wondering what's been moving CREE myself over the last few days. Just moving off of it's basing it did in the 160-170's? Rumors galore concerning an impending stock split too. But volume is not up so don't think it's folks 'in the know' (i.e. locals and employees) buying the stock - at least not in quantity. This run is a mystery. Whatever.. I'm hanging onto all my shares for quite awhile. Both core CREE holdings and my 'extra' trading shares.
