U.S. policy recognizes one China. Who is giving China back what is already theirs. The political assimilation of Taiwan will be peaceful and everything that is going on is part of a dance (no cutting in) to set the agenda.

re:>If China takes control of Taiwan by force, and I don't think they will get control by the free will of the people on that island...

And, of course, these dynamics have changed due to the recent "aquisitions" of advanced nuclear weapons.....
Simply the possession of such weapons speaks the loudest, regardless of peoples free will...

re:>I believe it was Nixon's detant policy of dividing the world into spheres of influence that gave China the idea that Taiwan would be given back to them in time.

That was reiterated through Clinton's "one China" comments.
(Which, in classic BC, style says 2 things at once.)

Of course Nixon was assuming that money from a communist general and the Loral Corp. would never influence policies regarding the sale of advanced rocket systems to China.

But what the heck was Nixon expecting down the line? A patriotic U.S. President?

Silly Fool,
