No doubt about the anti-Catholic bigotry in the culture at large, and McCain did his best to stoke the fire.

As far as the tension between Protestants and Catholics, it had all but disappeared until McCain brought it up again.

Thankfully, a lot of Catholics got their ire up over McCain's antics and the whole thing backfired on him.

Long live Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion!

McCarhy was a Catholic, and was endorsed by many Catholic churchmen. Oddly enough McCarthy was closely involved with a known homosexual (Cohn who much later died of AIDS) and protecting Cohn's catamite (Schein) from Army life. The exposure of his homosexual associations (during the Army-McCarthy hearings) led to much quiet ridicule, and embarrassed many of his priestly supporters. You must remember at that time that the role of the Church in covering up massive pederasty by the priesthood was largely known, but was suspected by many liberals, especially by those who had themselves been altar boys. This was one reason that many liberals fought Catholic political influence, especially Bishop Sheen and the Archbishop of New York who were highly politicized. I do not mean specifically to attack these prelates for either homosexuality or covering it up. It was so widespread that it is now impossible to determine who was responsible for it.
