(COMTEX) B: INFORMIX: Informix provides GTE with database technology
B: INFORMIX: Informix provides GTE with database technology to drive one of
world's largest OLTP systems; New system to save GTE $70 million annually and
paves way for future e-commerce applications

MAR 1, 2000, M2 Communications - MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Informix
Corporation (NASDAQ: IFMX) the technology leader in the software
infrastructure for the i.Economy, today announced that it has helped
GTE develop one of the world's largest and fastest on-line transaction
processing (OLTP) systems using Informix solutions. The Assignment,
Activation, Inventory Services (AAIS) system will handle more than 20
million customers and 40,000 users, and is expected to reduce GTE
operational costs by an estimated $70 million annually, allowing the
company to work with customers to amend their telecommunications
services in real-time.

The Informix system installation also provides Web integration that
distributes information across corporate intranets and extranets to
employees and customers, and delivers flexibility for future GTE
e-commerce applications.

"Informix has solved key problems, allowing us to migrate from a
legacy mainframe and open our data repository to make the data more
readily accessible. Our new state-of-the-art system is now the central
vault containing all of GTE's narrowband network inventory and allows
us to expand with our broadband services," said Milan Gupta, assistant
vice president for Enterprise Systems at GTE.

"This on-line transaction system has brought us significant gains and
has removed a huge bottleneck in our business operations. For GTE, AAIS
is one of the most significant technical accomplishments in the past 20
years."

The new GTE system runs on a Sun UE 10000 platform and will handle
more than 80,000 daily service orders and provide instant provisioning,
automated assignment and activation while the customer is online. GTE
anticipates increased customer satisfaction and retention and a quick
migration path to new network technologies, products and services.

"A key obstacle for GTE was the seamless migration of its data and
interfacing systems," said Jean-Yves Dexmier, Informix president and
CEO. "Informix consultants were able to offer a high level of expertise
on the project because they had already dealt with all the
configuration tuning, optimization and indexing strategies required for
an OLTP system of this magnitude."

Informix provides the only enterprise-class, easily customizable
database architecture that answers the growing demand from companies
seeking a single database engine that features reliability, high
performance, scalability, and the ability to manage multiple data
types.
