Papua New Guinea: Quote from today's Australian Financial Review

Only three oil stocks are regularly recommended by brokers. They include Woodside, Oil Search Ltd and Santos.

Oil Search is attracting funds, despite its flat share price, due to the upside inherent in the Papua New Guinea to Queensland gas pipeline project.

Brokers generally now rate as better than 50 per cent the chances of the PNG gas pipeline project proceeding, a view enhanced by a speech delivered by Oil Search's chief executive, Peter Botten, to the Securities Institute of Australia in Melbourne this week.

Australia's Oil Search Sees Profitability Up On PNG Project

MELBOURNE, March 14, Asia Pulse - Oil Search Ltd believes its investment in the Papua New Guinea to Queensland gas project will help the company double its profitability over three years.
Oil Search has a major stake in the $A3.7 billion ($US2.27 billion) project.
...
Oil Search managing director Peter Botten said that the PNG to Queensland project had the potential to be a "company maker".
He likened the experience to Woodside Petroleum before and after the North West Shelf gas project came onstream.

The pipeline, which will stretch 2,500 km from the PNG border to industrial markets in northern and central Queensland and down to Brisbane, will be one of the biggest pipeline projects in the world.

It will allow the company to commercialise 300 million barrels of oil equivalent, which will help drive the profitability of the group.
While project timing was still uncertain, Mr Botten later said: "We have a window for our contracts to deliver gas into."

"At the present time we can deliver into that... I can't tell you exactly the date we can start but we're certainly aiming at 2003 and 2004," he told reporters.
"The timing, in my view, will be within that range."
The timing of project go-ahead and delivery of gas relied on a number of issues, including the finalisation of gas contracts.
