Promatory Communications Unveils HomeDSL -- First End-to-End Product Boosts Broadband Access Availability
Wednesday, March 01, 2000

Fremont, Calif. ? March 1, 2000 - Promatory Communications, Inc., a leading developer of next-generation broadband access systems, today introduced HomeDSL? ?? a new way to deploy consumer DSL services that will dramatically accelerate the proliferation of DSL in the residential and small-office/home-office (SOHO) markets. Promatory is working in conjunction with its retail distribution partner, Creative Labs, Inc., to deploy HomeDSL.

HomeDSL includes three elements:
*Promatory's IMAS (Intelligent Multiservice Access System) configured for HomeDSL with high-density G.lite line cards installed at the carrier's central office;
*Creative Labs' Modem Blaster© DSL customer premises equipment- targeted to arrive at retail outlets in the Spring of 2000;
*Creative Labs' retail distribution, and customer service and support organizations.

HomeDSL's low hardware costs, reliable service and simplified deployment and installation will generate significant opportunities for the telecommunications industry. In addition, for the first time, consumers will soon be able to go to nationally recognized retail outlets and purchase low-cost, off-the-shelf DSL modems. After signing up with a local service provider, consumers will be able to simply plug a Modem Blaster© DSL into a PC and a standard phone jack and begin realizing the benefits of Web access at broadband speeds.

Because of HomeDSL's low implementation costs, providers will soon be able to offer home users and small businesses high-speed Internet access for $30 to $50 per month. As the retail distribution partner, Creative Labs will provide distribution and technical support for its low-priced modems to carriers deploying consumer DSL, relieving carriers of this significant cost barrier to mass deployment of consumer DSL services. In addition, Creative Labs will serve as a point of contact for customer assistance inquiries. This means HomeDSL carriers will not have to defray the costs of establishing and supporting a customer service operation. Promatory will provide carriers with consumer-oriented services through the IMAS and AutoDSL?, the IMAS service-provisioning software.

HomeDSL leverages Promatory's industry-leading G.lite subscriber port densities and extensive QoS capabilities to reduce the cost of network ownership and to guarantee performance levels so customer churn is minimized. Creative's G.lite Modem Blaster© DSL will be one of the first DSL modems to fully support the USB standard. After plugging the modem into a PC, a user-friendly interface will guide users through a few short installation steps. Once the modem is installed, service providers can provision broadband service from a network operations center through HomeDSL's point-and-click interface; no ?truck roll? is required.

?HomeDSL is a major advancement for the telecommunications industry,? said Roger Dorf, president and CEO of Promatory. ?Cost has been the barrier keeping DSL broadband from becoming a mainstream, in-the-home technology. With HomeDSL, carriers can profitably deliver broadband services at a price consumers can afford, with equipment that non-technical users can understand. It allows cost-conscious home users and small businesses to replace analog modems as the primary means of Internet access. HomeDSL is making high-bandwidth broadband telecommunications available to everyone.?

?Creative Labs has a rich history of developing consumer-friendly devices that give even novice users access to the latest cutting-edge technologies,? said Craig McHugh, president of Creative Labs. ?We are very pleased to be working with Promatory as its HomeDSL retail distribution partner. Creative's Modem Blaster© broadband solutions are a key component of HomeDSL and of Creative's Personal Digital Entertainment product category ? a key initiative to deliver a high-quality entertainment experience for connected consumers. For the first time, consumers will be able to get broadband access that is reliable and backed by industry-standard support by simply purchasing a Modem Blaster© DSL and signing up with their service provider over the Web.?
