Rupert Murdoch is prowling the Net in India. After having created a separate division, Star Multimedia recently, Star TV has decided to focus on delivering Internet over cable here through joint ventures and alliances with Internet Service Providers and cable operators.

The Star India management has also okayed investments up to at least $100 million over the next six to 12 months on a variety of IT-related businesses.

"We are focusing on the Net businesses and want it to be one of our big revenue earners," News TV India Ltd chief executive Peter Mukerjea told Business Standard.

Star India is set to undertake three pilot projects in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi for Internet-over-cable. It also proposes to set up another horizontal portal, apart from the existing one called Startv.com. The new portal will carry the Star brand name, but a final name has not yet been decided.

Mukerjea refused to divulge the names of the ISP and portal-companies Star is talking to. However, IT industry sources said Star India has initiated talks with several ISPs, including a Singapore-based company which, through a joint venture in India, has rolled out Internet services in Mumbai and Delhi and plans to expand its services in 25 major cities in India by end-2000. It is also regarded as India?s first ISP.

These initiatives gain importance as Chase Carey was in India last week and was briefed in detail about Star's India plans. Carey and James Murdoch were on Tuesday appointed interim co-chairmen of Star TV after executive chairman, Gareth Chang quit the post.
