RESEARCH ALERT - Warburg starts EMC

NEW YORK, March 2 (Reuters) - Warburg Dillon Read said it started coverage of data storage equipment maker EMC Corp. with a buy
rating and a price target of $140 a share.

-- Analyst Charlie Wolf said, ``Through its singular focus on storage, we believe EMC has built up a virtually unassailable position in the
system storage market.'

-- Said the one risk is the industry movement to standardize storage area networks. ``If the effort were successful, it could lead to the commoditization of EMC's hardware and falling margins,' he said. ``But we believe the chances of a true standard emerging are next to none.'

-- Estimated 2000 earnings at $1.45 a share and 2001 earnings at $1.90 a share.
