If the assumption that Itanium sucks running current 32 bit apps is correct, then that is only difference between SledgeHammer and Itanium.

You will still have an incentive to buy a new license for the 64bit version of the app, because it may perform better. The advantage of Sledgehammer is that the transition is smoother. You can do it on your own schedule. You will not be penalized (with a performance hit) for keeping an existing 32bit application.
