I was thinking the same thing. Microsoft would need a certain amount of fab capacity and the only way to ensure it with an uncertain product like X-Box is to build their own fab (which won't happen) or to invest in someone else's. And with the Athlon or a derivative probably being in X-Box a Microsoft investment makes lots of sense.

Don't Sony and Toshiba both support the fab making the PS2 stuff?
