1>> Why Every Enterprise Needs Web-Based Email By L.A. Heberlein, Seattle Lab Two and a half years ago, web-based email did not exist. Now almost everyone who uses a computer at all has at least tried web-based email, and for many new users, going to a web-based email account is the first thing they do upon accessing the Internet for the first time. Web-based email started with relatively few public web sites, widened to a large number of web sites, then was adopted widely in schools. Now most enterprises that provide email to their users are considering adding web-based email.

Individuals have long seen the benefits that web-based email can provide. Testament to this is the growth in the number of mailboxes from 5.4 million in 1997 to the current level of 118 million. Companies are catching on to the trend as well. Every other portal and search engine provides free web-based email to anyone who wants an account. At the same time, there are email outsourcing companies offering paid web-based email services. Why should an organization pay for web-based email when it could easily have employees set up email accounts with one of the free services?

3>> Email Everywhere By Carter Stowell, Wired News Copyright ¸ 1994-99 Wired Digital Inc. All rights reserved.
Web-based email is one of the great communications tools of our time. It is, basically, a way for you to send and receive email messages right on a webpage. This means not only that you no longer need an email application separate from your web browser, but that you can check your email from anywhere there's an internet connection.

4>> A Brief History Of Web Mail By Brian E. Taptich, The Red Herring magazine
Two years ago retrieving electronic mail was a hassle. By 1996 most office workers had the computer, Internet connection, and software they needed to send mail electronically. Now, signing up for a free email account that can be accessed with any browser involves only a brief visit to a web site - ranging from those of the handful of web portals (like Yahoo, the Microsoft Network, Netscape, and Excite) to some of the farthest-flung sites on the web.

[Note from E-stein, our brainy editor: Although this article was written in November 1998, it is interesting to note the accuracy of the predictions made by the author regarding the features and capabilities of future webmail products. This piece is definitely worth a read.]

5>> *** VIRUS UPDATE! ***
Computer Associates International Inc. said it had identified a new computer Virus named "Cholera" Wednesday, September 8, 1999. This virus infects computers via an email containing only ":)" and no text message. When the attachment to the email is opened, the virus sends a message to all the addresses in the computer's hard drive and prevents users from opening files stored in directories that were in infected by it.
So far, there haven't been any reports of Cholera causing any major problems in email networks. The virus is similar to two other viruses that wreaked havoc in computers worldwide earlier this year - Worm.ExploreZip and Melissa.
