>>to secretly urge oil producers to increase output <<

Secretly?

Surely you jest.

>>it will let the political genie out of the bottle<<

I thought you needed oil out of the bottle?<g>

>>potentially lead to future interventions<<

Interventions?

The only intervention needed is to reduce demand or increase supply.Since you can't increase supply..you must reduce demand.

Supply and demand.Remember?

>>That's why Clinton has not ruled out such an intervention<

It would be unwise to rule out anything that could bring equilibrium...including asking the American people to conserve energy. The Prime Minister of this country, who believes in free markets, suggested those with increased costs due to oil prices, should pass those costs on.You know, free markets..remember?

<<The Reserve is his leverage point>>

Not really..only a fool would tap into it's country's strategic reserve during times of peace, and I'm sure the OPEC boys are well aware of this, and also aware of the reality of the overall impact of such a trickling supply increase.

<So don't bet on this oil issue continuing into the summer.>

This " oil issue " ain't goin away anytime soon my friend.
OPEC may ease up at the next meeting, but the die is cast.
You will not see cheaper oil unless demand lessens through conservation or more production comes from non OPEC sources.
I would assume they are at near full production now,eh?Tis too late for it not to impact the summer season already!

>>After all, Saddam Hussein is still a thorn in their side and the persian gulf oil producers still rely upon the US to protect their political powerbase<<

From who?
