"...China would be commiting collective suicide." Maybe but I wouldn't assume they aren't serious. I've worked with a lot of Chinese people over the years and they have a different way of looking at things. In China, nobody questions authority. If the man on top says go, they go, even if the guy giving the orders is deranged. Once they've made up their minds about something, it's like arguing with a brick wall (kind of like the GUMMers).
