With the change in import policy after Independence, when the company could not sustain on marketing a few models of HMT watches, it took to servicing and repairing watches of all makes. Now to keep pace with the Internet-age, the Rs 10- crore retail chain of the Loyal Textile Mills Group has opened the country's first E-shop selling watches online. According to Loyal Textile Mills Group chairman and managing director Manickam Ramaswamy, like STD booths, Internet kiosks will soon come up in every village. Initially, about 5000 models of various Indian and foreign watch companies would be made available on the catalogue of the virtual shop. The site is designed by Satyam Infoway to give a feel of shopping at the actual showroom. It is categorised on the basis of age group for whom the watch is intended, type of wear and the occasion for which it is being bought. Selected watches can be put in a tray which is constantly refreshed till the final selection is made. A study conducted by the company indicates that 90 per cent of the watch purchased are gifted away. Also, it will save the corporates lot of to and fro trips to a retail store, as all the deciding authorities can see it together on the net and order.Payment against orders can be made either against delivery or through credit cards. About Rs 35 to Rs 50 will be charged towards delivery for credit cards, while orders booked through VPP will be free of cost. Unlike a lot of other e-shops, P Orr & Sons will hold the stocks itself, while logistics and delivery will be handled by Elbee. Currently, due to logistic limitations, the delivery is limited to anywhere in Tamil Nadu where there is post office. However, if the response is favourable, after three months delivery will be extended to rest of the country, said P V Subramanian, chief executive of P Orr & Sons. According to Subramanian, the retail-chain is expecting 1,500 deliveries and sales of around Rs 15 lakh from the e-shop by March 2001. It will offer all the schemes running in its six retail stores on the virtual store as well. Apart from that it is talking to watch companies to make watches exclusively for its e-shop. Timex has already released an exclusive model to commemorate 150 years of P Orr. Also, P Orr is the exclusive distributor of Piaget watches in Tamil Nadu. financialexpress.com
