FUTURETECH.BC.COM: PART 2

(BCTV) - A good part of the new stock market investing rush is happening via the Internet. But even the explosive phenomenon of online business is in for some big changes that could take it to another level altogether. As Brian Coxford reports in 'Part Two' of our focus on the future of high-tech in B.C., if you're impressed by the wireless capabilities of that laptop, you haven't seen anything yet.

Brian Coxford, reporting: "It's the new way to do business...a laptop on the go, in a park, in your car, at the mall, anywhere in the world. Critical data at your finger tips and it's unplugged."

Tony Phipps, InfoWave software: "We've got access to key information, email, critical data that makes it easier to do your job."

Brian Coxford, reporting: "The made in B.C. technology that provides a wireless connection to data is called the 'air card'. It's like a cellular phone on a PC card and it's going to change the way we do business and communicate forever."

Jeff Morris, Marketing Dir, Sierra Wireless: "We are at the intersection with information and there will be more and more portable computers. My laptop is the only computer I have. I just slide in the air card, go anywhere and I can conduct business."

Brian Coxford, reporting: "He should know. His Richmond company, Sierra Wireless created the air card. Slip it into your laptop and the Internet is a click away. Sierra started in 1993 making wireless modums for police cars. It's grown to 110 employees, doubling from last year and now it's riding the crest of the wireless wave."

Jeff Morris, Marketing Dir, Sierra Wireless: "I can't see it slowing down. There are no horizons. People will be connected to the Internet, palm pilots, laptops. It's the way it is."

Brian Coxford, reporting: "Partnered with Sierra Wireless is InfoWave of Burnaby. They design the software allows you to connect with your office and do business on your wireless PC."

Todd Carter, CFO, InfoWave software: "Basically, if it's compelling content that's changing frequently and you want access to it - your mobile environment - we deliver it. That's the business we are in. It is happening right now a real time window into your calendar, your contact info, your corporate Internet. We are shipping those products right now."

Brian Coxford, reporting: "And that information is coming your way in today's high-tech appliances, pagers cell phones, laptops. InfoWave is testing all the new technology. Its software has been developed over the last six years. It's a company about the same size as Sierra Wireless and both are hoping to get a big chunk of a potential $6-billion wireless market.

If you think that going wireless is just a fad consider a survey done by the International Data Corp. in the U.S. There are 7.5-million wireless computers in operation in the U.S. Now that will grow to 61.5-million in 2003. That's a 725% increase and that's only in the U.S. Wireless is worldwide.

Nokia, the world's largest cell phone manufacturer, using over 50 strategically placed antennae, has just turned Vancouver airport into a wireless zone for computers. Nokia also has its version of an air card, that you can buy or rent and eventually it will take you wireless at all the airports in the world."

Ahmed Al-Hayderi, Nokia, Business Development: "Nokia's vision is in the future the cell phone and the laptop will merge to give you your data in this environment."

Brian Coxford, reporting: "At InfoWave, a couple U.S. investment bankers have dropped by to find out more about its software technology. This company and Sierra Wireless with its air card are setting their sights on the big U.S. market as the wireless information age takes off."
