Toshiba develops 64-megabit RWW flash memory

TOKYO, March 2 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp <6502.T> said on Thursday it has developed the world's first 64-megabit flash memory supporting the Read While Write (RWW) function for use mainly in cellular phones.

The RWW function allows data to be simultaneously read from and written into memory, it said. Users of cellular phones equipped with the function can receive an incoming call while saving a file or updating the phone's address book.

Demand for larger flash memory is rising along with expanded functions offered by cell phones such as NTT Docomo's <9437.T> i-Mode, which can be used to access the Internet and for online banking.

Intel Corp <INTC.O>, Fujitsu Ltd <6702.T>, Mitsubishi Electric Corp <6503.T>, and NEC Corp <6701.T> now make 32-megabit flash memories with RWW function.

Toshiba plans to start making the 64-megabit chip in April and aims to produce over 500,000 units a month by September or October for sale worldwide. Samples of the 64-megabit chip will be sold at $60 per chip, it said.

By 0444 GMT, Toshiba's shares were up 17 yen or 1.81 percent at 954 yen.
