Sun Netscape, TCS in pact for iPlanet solutions

Sun Netscape Alliance on Thursday entered into a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to launch its iPlanet solutions in India. TCS would act as a systems integrator for providing e-commerce solutions in the country, TCS said in a statement in New Delhi. The partnership between TCS and iPlanet e-commerce solutions would focus on building successful online businesses and provide end-to-end e-commerce solutions, including consultancy, application design, implementation and training, a release said.

DTS says it can't absorb further tariff revision

Department of telecom services (DTS) on Thursday said that it was not in a position to absorb further tariff revision for telecom services. DTS had asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) before it was reconstituted in January to review the situation arising out of the huge revenue losses to the department, PS Saran, secretary, DTS, said. The department was likely to suffer a revenue loss to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore during the current financial year due to implementation of revised tariff in May last year.

Viatel buys AT&T UK unit for $125 m

Telecommunications services provider Viatel Inc has said that it bought No. 1 US long-distance telephone carrier AT&T Corp's United Kingdom unit, AT&T Communications (UK) Ltd, for $125 million in cash, boosting its European network.

Microsoft, Intel unveil business network box

Software group Microsoft Corp and chip giant Intel Corp have unveiled a new device they said will help millions of small businesses wire their offices and connect to the Internet. The device, based on Intel's Celeron processor and running a version of Microsoft's Windows NT business operating system, would act like a mini-server, letting up to 25 computers share files, printing and Internet access, company officials said.

MAPS launched in India

Microsoft on Thursday announced the launch of Microsoft Authorised Premier Support (MAPS) programme in India through partnerships with Compaq and Wipro, to integrate services into a single support offering. The support programme, launched in India for the first time, allows customers to get services from Microsoft as well as work with Wipro and Compaq support services divisions.

Godfrey Philips shifts Four Square account to Rediffusion

Tobacco giant Godfrey Philips has assigned its flagship brand Four Square to Rediffusion DY & R. The account moves from Ogilvy & Mather and shall be handled by the New Delhi office of the agency.. Four Square, Godfrey Philip's largest franchise, was launched in India in 1961. Godfrey Philips India is a joint venture between the KK Modi Group and the global cigarette major Phillip Morris.
