I agree with your post - except the part about Win2K security... my impression is that you have to take the basic system and reduce the default levels of security to open the holes. The default for most Unix systems is relatively open.

I also have pretty lax security on my Unix systems, for the same reasons you state - administration tools are plentiful and useful... and I don't lock my desk drawers either... but the proxy which connects to my DSL service is pretty tight.

Perhaps you are more aware of potential security holes in Win2K than I am - I admit this is not an area where I have spent a lot of time, and so my information is mostly anecdotal.
