Re: More e-mail about the 20/20 show Author: CynicInParadise (1 Msg) Author status: Preferred | Neutral | Ignored Yale sensation. 1:47AM PST, Mar 2, 2000 My heart goes out to Mr. Van de Velde. When I was in college, one of our favorite professors was accused of sexual harassment by a mentally ill student who had $40.00 to start the lawsuit. By the time our professor had his day in court with all of us testifying on his behalf (5 women/1 man) his career was almost over. He'd lost the zeal that made him such a great professor and his entire family suffered the alienation so common in these cases. It really hurt our division and the accuser didn't even show up to court!! It takes so little to damage someone's reputation. I followed Mr. Van de Velde's line of thinking when he just "wanted to see the crime scene out of concern and/or morbid curiosity," and "cooperate with the law because you're innocent." Made all the sense in the world to me.And then the police turning down the services of well-known forensics expert, Dr. Li. Police departments in idyllic little towns should turn over these investigations to people who have more experience dealing with crimes of this high profile, high sensation type. Here in paradise, we had the same thing happen. The murder was so brutal, that of course everybody wants closure, but they've now convicted three men on circumstantial evidence. THE DNA OF ALL THREE MEN WAS FOUND NOWHERE ON THE VICTIM, BUT DNA WAS FOUND AT THE CRIME SCENE AND ON THE VICTIM THAT THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HER. I wasn't a witness to either of these crimes and I don't know if Mr. Van de Velde or these other men are guilty or innocent. I do know that it is horrible that people are convicted by the media before they're ever even charged. I wanted to email Mr. Van de Velde to tell him that I was praying for him, and that his innocence or guilt is between him and his God until somebody finds some hard evidence to charge and then convict him in a court of Man. It also strikes me as rather convenient that Yale got to serve up Mr. Van de Velde as their sacrificial lamb to take the heat off their Ivy-League ass. Did Ms. Jovin's "best friend" get the same treatment as Mr. Van de Velde. He also knew her very well. Maybe he was jealous of the fact that Ms. Jovin sought Mr. Van de Velde's approval so much that it upset her when he didn't pay the kind of attention to her essay that she thought it deemed. Maybe she wasn't angry at Mr. Van de Velde at all. Maybe her "best friend" told this story to throw suspicion off of him and onto Mr. Van de Velde. Maybe she was headed to Mr. Van de Velde's house to "discuss" her essay with her "favorite professor" when her "best friend" caught up with her and... Anyway, since I couldn't find Mr. Van de Velde's email, please give him mine. Thanks for letting me vent. I wish I could e-mail him and chat with him, my heart goes out to this man. I believe that the police and Yale should be ashamed of themselves. I can't believe that Yale did not stand up for the Professor, he has a spotless back round and the police were just looking to cover up their own botched mistakes! By pinning this on an innocent and cooperative man, I feel sorry for the victims family but they should not be so quick to judge, they are not judge and jury they could be barking up the wrong tree!!! And are also quilty of the destroying of an innocent man. I will hope and pray that somehow an incompetant police force can by the help of God find the real killer and start rebuilding the community that I no longer respect. The Police Chief should step down, and also the person at Yale that chose to hang their own man out to the public as a sacraficial lamb. boards.go.com ===== Author: dlr67 (1 Msg) Author status: Preferred | Neutral | Ignored Jim van de Velde 7:09AM PST, Mar 2, 2000 I was amazed to see Jim van de Velde on 20/20 last night. I met this man personally and was acquainted with him for about two months. In that time, I developed a very favorable impression of him. He is a very nice person; he was very helpful and friendly in my experience with him, very down-to-earth and conscientious, a bit on the serious side. As a single female, I think it is also important to point out that I never had any sense that he was "creepy", as some women apparently have reported. I would assume that a man in his profession has come in contact with many, many female students and colleagues, and for two or three to report he seemed "creepy" seems like a very low percentage to me. In a case like this, of course anyone with an unfavorable opinion of him is going to voice it. I am disgusted with the way that the New Haven police department have ruined this man's life. I think it is terrible that they can so arbitrarily turn an innocent person's life completely upside down. I hope that Jim van de Velde is cleared immediately, and I also hope that the New Haven police department will do all they can to find the real perpetrator of this crime. The more time they waste sullying the reputation of this man, the colder the trail to the real killer becomes. boards.go.com
