Zi8 input on Alcatel new "OneTouch" 300 500 700 Series phones announced at CEBIT in Germany: ****************************************** ALCATEL INTRODUCES UPGRADED MULTIPLE TIER PRODUCT RANGE WITH FOUR NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2000 CeBit, Hanover, February 25th 2000 -- Alcatel today announced a major new multiple tier GSM product strategy and the coming introduction of four new models. This represents a significant overall upgrading in the company's product range and demonstrates Alcatel's ability to respond to quantitative and qualitative market demands. Alcatel's 2000 product range starts with the existing entry level handsets such as the One TouchTM Easy DB , Club, Max, Gum. The new core market One TouchTM 300 series, mid-range devices, represent the essence of the Alcatel consumer handset: smaller and lighter, a true design statement with integrated, no-nonsense smart functions and an accessible price. The two models at the top of the new range, One TouchTM 500 and One TouchTM 700, are both extra-compact, high quality devices of a style and design unlike any currently on the market. The One TouchTM DB range is available immediately and the One TouchTM View-WAP will follow in April. This announcement comes fast on the heels of the company's demonstration of its new end-to-end positioning technology to display location based information and services on a GSM screen and presentation of a new WAP-based One TouchTM View. Due in April, this first dual band handset of its type aims specifically at the consumer market. The core market One TouchTM 300 series will be launched in the summer with the premium One TouchTM 500 and One TouchTM 700 models following in September and October respectively. The top of the range devices - One TouchTM 500 & 700 - are equipped with a new super-light battery for extended use, increased talk time and stand-by. They will also provide WAP and/or Bluetooth based features, and an improved short messaging service capability that uses new, state-of-the-art predictive input technology. They are also equipped with an organizer that can be synchronized with the user's PC and voice features such as speech recognition for instant automatic dialing. The ergonomy of these models -- the way they sit in the hand and their ease of use -- is also outstanding. "We foresee significant developments in the mobile handset market over the next months and years," explained Jacques Combet, President of Alcatel's mobile phone activities. "Replacement sales will start to outstrip those to new customers as market penetration reaches its natural ceiling in many countries. Replacement purchasers will seek more sophisticated devices". "At the same time, different types of subscribers are looking for specific features which add even more diversity to the idea of functionality. Technology is becoming more malleable, adapting to the user rather than the inverse. But technological evolution is also taking us towards a fork in the road with voice going one way and Internet-based services going another". "As a manufacturer, we have to plan for this migration towards more and more sophisticated devices. This represents an additional challenge but it gives us the opportunity of doing again what we best enjoy -- meeting user needs. These devices may cost more but the range of services they will deliver stagger the imagination." Combet continued. All new models come from Alcatel's award winning design team and will be available in a wide choice of colors. All the new models possess functions and features that have now become mandatory such as dual band, hands free, vibrator, navigation key and all the usual memory and directory functions.
