MARCH 2: Gururaj Deshpande, Kanwal Rekhi, N R Naryana Murthy, Rakesh Mathur... The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumni list reads like a who's who of the information age. But until now, the IITs have confined themselves to shaping brilliant technical minds and shied away from grooming them to be billionaries.

Now, inspired by the mega successes of its alumni, IIT-Bombay is taking a step in this direction by setting up the first ever campus incubator for software companies in the country. It has drawn on the models at Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Texas University. "The purpose is to excite entrepreneurship in young minds so they don't run away to phirang lands," says D B Phatak, head of Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KRSIT)....
