re: The Goose ! as in Richard Gossage...

I was about 12-14 years old, or so; when I first saw and "heard" the Goose... Was at Commiskey Park - I was at the game with my family and "heard" this ungodly "pop" coming from the bullpen & saw this crowd swarming around the pen.

I begged my Dad to let me sneak past the ushers and to go down to the bullpen area to watch both the "Goose" and Terry Forster warm up. Both of these guys were just up from the minors and firing pure liquid heat... you could hear them warming up anywhere in the stadium.

Did you ever see JR Richard of the Astro's ? - 6'8" - an earlier version of Randy Johnson... - wicked slider as well (oxymoron?)...

During that era of the White Sox - I of course was a Yankee fan, but the Sox had Dick Allen - ie: don't call me Richie of the Phillies fame... he would often arrive at the ballpark in the 3rd inning or so, late- often drunk , or hung over. They'd put him in to pinch hit late in the game and I swear he hit about 5-6 game winning pinch hit home runs in these scenario's.He was the one guy that no one went up to after games to ask for an autograph - one scary dude... He was a Chicago legend... Also he used a "war club" for a bat - a Babe Ruth size club, no one since has used a bat like that...

I remember seeing Frank Howard hit a line drive down the 3rd base line that I swear never got 5" off the ground the entire way to the left field wall - where it ricochet'd off the wall about 75'... just a frozen rope line drive - that was one big strong dude... Dick Allen hit a few like that as well...

As a Kid - I saw the end of the Mantle era - then had to endure the "golden era" of Bobby Murcer & Horace Clarke while I was in little league - talk about being shamed to wear a Yankee hat - but hey; my friends were all Cubs fans (VBG)... but; then soon came Reggie, Catfish Hunter, Bucky Dent & the Billy Martin & George Steinbrenner show - classic period...

For me - the mid 70's saw the end of an era... I remember the Mantle, Mays-McCovey, Aaron, Killebrew,Yaz, Frank Robinson Kaline, Colovito,Banks, era come to an end... the last of that era passed to the Oakland A's & the Big Red Machine of Bench, Morgan, Rose,Perez etc... that was the end of the Golden Era for my childhood...

Now with free agency & expansion - you don't have guys like Kaline, or Ernie Banks become identified with a city and a team - professional athletes are now like Manpower Temporary Staffing...

Biggest thing I'm looking forward to this year is if the Cub's Kerry Wood is healthy - I came home one day early and caught his record setting strikeout game on TV in about the 6th inning - unbelieveable ! - I had goose bumps on my arm for 3 innings... this kid had "the gift"... hope he can come back from a serious surgery.

... ah yes; Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie & the Oilpatch... hey Beer tender - give me another Old Style...
