Betty, There is a piece on the Sony Music clip in the NY Times "Circuits" section from yesterday 02March2000.

It states that at $299.00 it is an expensive way to listen to music. Also, the LCD is small and only gives you track numbers. There are limited EQ options. Also, you need to convert files into "ANTRAC3" which sounds like "ANTHRAX3" if you say it three times fast. Also, there is no removable memory option.

I think Sony is trying to force people into using proprietary standards both for memory (the chewing gum-like Memory Stick) and now for the CODEC called "ANTRAX". I don't think the public is willing to swallow this just yet.
