Behind the scenes, top Kremlin figures are planning to clean up the shattered image of the late Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, one of history?s greatest tyrants and mass murderers.
Unwilling to go public with the plan to portray Stalin as Mr. Nice Guy, Kremlin officials are using a newspaper with close connections to the Russian hierarchy to promote the idea that Stalin should be remembered as "one of the great statesmen of the twentieth century."

The newspaper Nyezavissimaya Gazeta is controlled by Boris Berezovsky, one of Russia?s richest men, known to be close to the new Russian leadership. A billionaire, Berezovsky has been accused of being deeply involved in the massive corruption that marked the regime of Boris Yeltsin.

In a lead story on the occasion of Stalin?s birthday last December 22, the paper, allegedly reflecting the views of acting president Vladimir Putin and his top aides, sought to present Stalin as a reformer who modernized a backward Russia and created the nation?s governing and industrial structures.
