**OT** EU Praises India for Economic Reforms

Friday, March 3 3:37 PM SGT

BERLIN, March 3 Asia Pulse - The European Union has praised the Indian government for ending adhocism in the fundamental economic reforms carried out in the last five months and asserted that the "second generation" economic reforms would be the "key factor" for the growth of Indo-EU economic and trade relations.

"We have every admiration for the bold approach (of the Indian government) in putting on track a series of fundamental reform projects which no longer simply are ad hoc in nature but follow a definite strategic plan," EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy told PTI on the phone from Brussels before leaving for a week-long visit to India starting today.

Lamy, who will be the first high level European Commission official to visit India, said a "stable and predictable" economic environment in India could boost EU's investment there and lead to an inflow of technology and know-how.

While European Commission sources said a relaunch of the global trade talks would figure prominently on the agenda during Lamy's talks with his Indian interlocutors, the trade commissioner himself said he would like to discuss the "post-Seattle landscape" and assess the prospects of relaunching the WTO negotiations this year.

He said many countries incuding India came away from Seattle "frustrated" and that the international community needed to learn from that experience, build up confidence again and get the "show back on road".
