You win on the "Gary Bauer is a clown" debate. No question McCain's temperament got the best of him with this disastrous frontal assault on Pat Robertson. He fell for the bait. It only dignified Robertson in the eyes of his dim-witted followers and made them rush out and vote against the anti-Christ McCain. McCain seems to me to forget how dumb people are--and acts as if they were smarter, more educated and more discerning than they really are, on average. He can be tone-deaf to people's sensitivities--what will ruffle their feathers irreparably. In that sense McCain is both a brilliant refreshing original and not an effective politician at all. By the way, Bush's ads in New York on McCain being some enemy of breast cancer research are deliberate calculated out-of-context distortions and lies about McCain's voting record. Bush is a liar. It's breathtakingly hypocritical because these votes were, if I heard correctly on CNN, against huge Department of Energy taxpayer pork-barrel boondoggles with these little breast cancer and other items tacked on in the fine print. McCain was voting with Republicans to reduce government spending for the DOE and gets called an enemy of women because of that. Bush is a liar. Eddie Haskel is reborn.
