If so then Itanium will only sell into niche server markets until all the infrastructure porting is complete. Most servers require a substantial amount of software that is not part of the base OS. To name but a few, there are various web servers, database interfaces, disk management tools, remote access tools, Java environments, JIT compilers, ASP plugins, virus checkers, printer drivers, DSP drivers...

<You mean 32-bit apps, since no OS or tools will be available>

It does not require a 64 bit OS to run 64 bit apps.
