1,000 Physicians to Install PocketScript Prescribing System

PR NEWSWIRE - March 03, 2000 11:30

CINCINNATI, Mar 3, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Pocketscript, Inc., of Cincinnati, Ohio and the Primary Care Network (PCN), of Springfield, Mo., announced today an arrangement to install the PocketScript(TM) a wireless, hand-held, electronic prescribing system in the offices of 1,000 physicians. Pocketscript(TM) transmits prescriptions directly from the doctor's examining room to the pharmacy of the patient's choice. The prescription is sent via fax or electronically over the Internet. Connect2.Health.com an Internet site related to PCN will be the portal through which this leading edge medical technology will be provided.

Primary Care Network is a non-profit corporation dedicated to education and training of primary care physicians. Roger Cady M.D. and CEO of Connect2.Health.com states "Pocketscript(TM) can dramatically reduce prescription drug errors caused by illegible writing and/or unclear phone conversations." A recent American Medical Association study concluded that more than 100,000 deaths occur each year due to adverse drug reactions.

Stephen S. Burns, Co-creator and CEO of PocketScript(TM) states that "PocketScript(TM) will become the market leader in the potential multi-billion dollar hand-held prescribing category with the addition of these 1,000 new electronic prescribing physicians." The installation of the PocketScript systems for these 1,000 new physicians will begin this month.

Burns observes that PocketScript(TM) provides the physician with a highly efficient way of writing electronic prescriptions requiring only a few touches of the screen. The Pocketscript(TM) system operates on the Microsoft CE operating system. Currently, the software is being offered on the Hewlett- Packard Jornada and the NEC Mobilepro hand held devices, but any Windows CE compatible device may be used. Physicians using the Pocketscript(TM) system can write up to 250 prescriptions a day without recharging the battery.

Thaddeus M. Bort, MD, co-creator of PocketScript(TM) and an avid user of the PocketScript(TM) system, concurs. Dr. Bort states "PocketScript reduces errors and nearly eliminates callbacks from pharmacists. The net effect of PocketScript(TM) has been an increase in the quality and safety of my patient's care." In addition to reducing prescription errors, PocketScript(TM) furnishes the pharmacist with a clearly printed prescription that will save the pharmacies time and money. Another "quality of care" issue is that due to the instantaneous transmission of the Rx by PocketScript(TM), the prescription is generally ready when the patient arrives at the pharmacy.

Dr. Bort concludes that the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR), which is a comprehensive reference text of all drugs, their side effects, drug-drug interactions, and prescribing information, has become so unwieldy (over 3,000 pages) that "it is unrealistic to expect the physician to have memorized all the information contained in the PDR." With Pocketscript(TM), all the information of the PDR is only a screen touch away.

Physicians using Pocketscript(TM) now have the convenience of Internet access via high-speed connections in the privacy of the exam room. This permits physicians to wirelessly tap into the wealth of medical information on the Internet at sites such as Connect2.Health.com. In addition, physicians are now able to e-mail colleagues and experts around the world for real time consultations. Contact PocketScript.com, attention Todd Helmink, or Connect2.Health.com, attention Brad Hedrick, for more information on this revolutionary development in the prescribing of medicine.
