Perhaps Veritas could buy Seagate, then spin off the disk drive & tape units to shareholders. Or sell it to... anyone. Samsung would like to be a big player in the dd business, and given the strength in the DRAM business, I think they might even have the money to do it. They would get big fast, real fast, and Veritas has their 30-35% stake back. For less than the market is currently valuing it. I haven't done all of the math to figure out if that would be worth it, but....

Seagate stock is sure looking strong these days, unlike every other company in this sector except for VECO. Over 54 now.

"I always have wondered if a foreign company domiciled in a country with different capital gains treatment would find Seagate appetizing for its hidden assets. Who this would be, I haven't a clue."

Robert- Try a German corporation. They are eliminating taxes on selling of corporate assets. It's supposed to take place in 2001. See Message 12875534 for comments. I was blown away when I read this, but maybe it plays into your idea of a new world economy. Hard to believe with their newly elected socialist government, the zero taxes idea will hold. You would think it would be something we could pass in the US before a European country beat us to it. -MikeM(From Florida)
