Kash, <Just like they supported 3dnow and 3dnow2>

I didn't know MS supported "Athlon New Instructions." Where did you see this?

<With Athlon running x-box look for AMD/Msft to be working even closer together>

On what? Finding ways to make Athlon more console-friendly?

Although MS has tons of employees and resources, wouldn't you think that they're going to give priority to IA-64 over x86-64?

MSFT will support sledgehammer period.

Just like they supported 3dnow and 3dnow2.

It's not that simple, but if Sledgehammer looks viable, Microsoft will be compelled to support it, if only to keep Linux at bay. And if Sledgehammer is not viable, well, then it doesn't matter...

Of course, Intel could preempt all this by announcing their own 64-bit extensions (perhaps under pressure from Microsoft and other parties). The likelihood of this increases if Merced is a flop. Microsoft would definitely not want to support two different "x86-64" instruction sets - that would be madness.
