"Where are the W-CDMA chipsets that match the CDMA2000 and HDR chipsets from qcom?"

Apparently they are in Austin. Check out Texas Instrument's price action after investors realized both Nokia and Ericsson will purchase 3G stuff from TI.

If nok, ericy, and qcom all have IPRs for W-CDMA then it's peachy for nok and ericy, but no so great for any other manufacturer. Why pay royalties to nok, ericy, and qcom for W-CDMA when you can go with CDMA2000 and only pay royalties to qcom. And aren't there others claiming IPRs for W-CDMA? Won't it be years of squabbling and court cases before it settles out?

The other manufacturers probably have something that Nokia and Ericsson want in other telecommunications technologies and will cross-license. I'd guess that most manufacturers will find themselves in the position of paying only Qualcomm, and then paying Qualcomm smaller royalties for the larger WCDMA market or larger royalties for the smaller CDMA2000 market.

Of course, smaller royalties for the larger market can still amount to large royalties.

It's rather optimistic of Qualcomm to be building HDR chipsets before HDR makes its way through the standards process.

And just to pretend that I can talk about Nokia on the Nokia thread, let me talk about 3Com. The Palm IPO this week drove my 3Com down nearly 20 points. Glad it was a good week for Nokia.
