Sources Say Intel's 1-GHz Chips Due Wednesday
(03/03/00, 7:39 a.m. ET) By Mark Hachman, Electronic Buyers' News
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intel will formally launch its 1-GHz Pentium III microprocessor next Wednesday (March 8), according to sources such as computer manufacturers.

The launch, to be backed by Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, will almost certainly come in the form of limited-production "special editions," according to the sources, who said they were briefed by Intel.

PCs using the chips will feature specially designed motherboards with larger heat sinks to accommodate the faster processors.

While the announcement may score some points with Intel's OEMs, volume production of the gigahertz processor is still slated for the third quarter, according to representatives at Intel recently.

Advanced Micro Devices in Sunnyvale, Calif., is also expected to launch a 1-GHz Athlon processor in March. Observers said it's possible the companies will rein in their introduction dates as each races to be first across the 1-GHz finish line.
