It sure is Bob.ALA & Optics :
I think that when the Big Boys
( Agilent & ALA ) start getting into, it is possible thatÿ
the little start ups may get pushed aside.
As I see it, the only reason JDSU is ahead of everybody isÿ
because they started earlier because nobody thought 4 years ago
that optics was going anywhere anytime soon.
JDSU was having a hell of a time 4 years ago getting theirÿ
share price off the ground.

At this point with Agilent it is different.

I just came back from a Medical meeting and found that most hospitals
in the US use Agilent's technology for networks in the Intensive Care units,
for surgery, etc. monitors, etc.HP is big in medicine.
Medicine is now going digital and most procedures are doneÿ
using fiberoptics, laparoscopically.

There is a tremendous number of people that have optical knowledge
starting from Cannon, Nikon etc., you name it.

I think once ALA gets in it, with NN, I thinkÿ they will have a much better
idea as to how to try and configure these networks in particular in regardsÿ
to the last mile and how to interconnect/interface optical with cable.
The technology provides Alcatel the ability to develop products that can switch
optical signals of any data rate and format, without the costly reversion to the
electrical domain required in today's networks. This format independence allowsÿ
Alcatel to construct many products required for the optical layer of
tomorrow's telecom networks.

.........The Agilent switch matrix design allows manufacture of large, scaleable, bi-directionalÿ
and strictly non-blocking optical switch matrices. Further details
about the technology behind the optical switch will be announced by Agilent at theÿ
Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) in Baltimore on March
7, 2000.

I think NTÿ & LU will have some competition now,

Alcatel Teams with Agilent Technologies in Development of Optical Network
Elements

PARIS and SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 2000--
Alcatel and Agilent Technologies (Agilent) today announced a partnering
agreement to allow Alcatel to develop key optical network switching elements
based on Agilent technology.ÿ

The technology provides Alcatel the ability to develop products that can switch
optical signals of any data rate and format, without the costly reversion to the
electrical domain required in today's networks. This format independence allowsÿ
Alcatel to construct many products required for the optical layer of
tomorrow's telecom networks.

``Flexibility and scalability are prerequisites for developing the next-generation
network that Alcatel envisions. The early adoption of this optical switch
technology will allow Alcatel to achieve a leading position in the emerging optical layerÿ
of the communications network,' commented Christian Reinaudo,
president of Alcatel Optics.ÿ

The Agilent switch matrix design allows manufacture of large, scaleable, bi-directionalÿ
and strictly non-blocking optical switch matrices. Further details
about the technology behind the optical switch will be announced by Agilent at theÿ
Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) in Baltimore on March
7, 2000.

``This agreement underscores Agilent's commitment to the communications industry
and the development of optical technologies, which is important for
meeting the increasing demand for capacity,' said John O'Rourke, general managerÿ
of Agilent Optical Networking Division.ÿ
