Richard,

Americans have a long history of isolationism. We were that way before WW1, WWII, Vietnam,... etc, etc, etc.

However, we fought and died in each of those wars and rallied to the cause.

Unfortunately, the lesson of WWII has so quickly been forgotten. An ounce of prevention can substitute for a pound of cure when it comes to hostility.

Now you don't really believe that if we back down on maintaining our support for a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan/China issue, that the leadership in Bejing will stop there?

After all, if they can claim that Taiwanese, who's natives speak a different dialect of Chinese for the most part, are part of China, then why not declare that the Japanese, who's Konji alphabet is derived from Chinese script, are also part of China?

If we back down on Taiwan.. we'd might as well just hand over all of Asia to China's dominance.

I'd love to see Taiwan peacefully reunified, and I think most of them would as well. But it has to be done without bluster or intimidation, and with respect and acknowledgement of concerns by both parties.

Besides, if you look at what happened when the earthquake occurred in Taiway last fall, then you fully understand why economically Taiwan is in the strategic interest of the US.

Regards,

Ron

Richard, that news should come as no surprise to you. This country has become a nation of equity traders and investors. The stock market has become part of the national pastime, along with baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. Unfortunately, most people only care about their families and the continuation of the equity bull market. That could change, however, in a second.
