V-Man:
Thought that would bring back memories. Seems I even remember your post when you left the DELL thread. I recall what you said and who told you it was time to go, too. That was a long time ago.....
(You're probably really wondering who I am now.....)

Yeah, I'm still bullish on the Q, too.
You need to get more excited about JDSU and CREE.

Rick

greater detail on ELON conference, and a TA tidbit on QCOM

first, today was a failed attempt to take down theQ
we closed where we opened, a bullish reversal from much lower level
in JapCandle parlance, got a "hammer" or "doji star"
running out of bad hair day allocation on this mother of all techs

now more details on ELON from conference notes:
----------------------------------------------
main customers now, primarily Europe
- Merloni (Ita), wash/dry appliance
- BGPT (Neth), wiring devices with switch & controls
- Vattenfall (Swd), meter reading, fault monitor, energy usage analysis & itemization
- SILD (Fran), power mgmt, alarm, metering
- Phast, audio/visual, lighting, security, intercom
- Detroit Edison, time use pricing
- Seven/Eleven, 7300 stores, power, lighting, HVAC, 10% savings
- British Airways
- Bellagio (Vegas), magnificent water fountain control, 1175 jets, 6200 lights, water show, using fiberoptic free topology subnets
- NYCity Transit, door, PA, signs
- BART rapid transit in SFArea

LONWORKS is an open free standard control network
- flat peer to peer architecture that consolidates connections
- allows multivendor support for bestinclass appliance products
- e.g. dim switch, TV, security, PC, thermostat, motion sensor, fire sprinkler, yard sprinkler, variable air volume, door gate phone, circuit breaker, elevator, weather station, washer, dryer, light systems/displays, camera (pan, tilt, zoom)

- full circle evolution of customers: first residential, then commercial, then comm customers' residential businesses

ELON has something seriously missed by MSFT's UPnP and Sun's Jini competitive products: networked control in an end to end solution from source computer system to end appliance device

Jini detects LONWorks and its devices
ELON practically runs the MSFT UPnP Steering Committee
UPnP = Universal Plug 'n' Play

standards body is OSG, Open Services Gateway, which allows service providers tomeet device mfrs
- Cisco has been a LONWorks partner for 18 months
- jointly develop LONMark standard for integrating LONWorks and IP networks
- pursuing joint developmt of standard LONWorks interface module

ELON licenses mfg of neural chips, silicon to software semiconductors
- currently Toshiba and Cypress, with Motorola listed but recently dropped (according to UWest)

ELON has a product called "i.LON" internet server box

principal bugaboos: signal noise, attentuation, distortion
- noise from picking up static along the way
- attention from gradual loss of signal after traveling a distance
- distortion from actual change of signal upon arrival
*** ELON products have remarkable detection capability of 1/1000-th of original signal strength

ELON designs API (application program interface) for companies to design devices atop
- enables backbone in design
- tremendous simplication for vendors to take advantage of
- akin in my mind to replacement of old telephone circuit switching networks fully dedicated with links... by a solid network backbone highway for ease of device addressing

LONMaker for Windows
- allows integration of preprogrammed function blocks
- for system design, installation, maintenance of configuration of devices
- PCMCIA, ISA interface, remote modem
- key purpose is to EXTEND CONTROL REMOTELY OUTSIDE THE HOME
- extracts database from devices in recoverable fashion
- employs neuron id's burned into devices (48 bit, 5 digit, via service PIN)
- uses Visio Stencils, a common emerging standard
- allows "wink & test" for configurations and displays
- navigate GUI tree to find point of data conversation via Dynamic Data Exchange (via point & click within MSWindows)
- ELON transceiver uses Wind River Systems embedded software, as does the great majority of configured devices

WILL SPAWN AN ENTIRE NEW SECTOR BUSINESS OF HOME SERVICES

no competition for complete IP platform enabling device monitor and control
- network, communication, basic blocks
- needs follow thru on supporting cast of vendors
- to date 1500 products, 10 million installed devices, 4000 companies

why did the internet take off when Ethernet and TCP/IP were around?
answer: killer app Netscape browser, HTTP protocol, fast modems, all combined in the mix to force evolution, liftoff

in home appliance market, LONWorks, ELON transceiver, and neural chips should facilitate the evolution, liftoff

ELON speaker implied the growth rate of their business was astronomical currently and in near future
- also stated flatly that all technical challenges have been solved, with remaining challenges all standards related

we saw a demo of ELON Palo Alto Demo Room, with lights, shades, etc
- PC altered the scene remotely, as did a cellphone!!!

anyone who wishes to help defray my costs of $400, much appreciated (ignoring gasoline, flat tire, Peppermint Patties, V8 Splash, and several hours time)
so far 4 people with $25 each have coughed up, looking for 16 in all
ELON investors most appropriate to help
I own no ELON stock shares
anyone else willing to drop $25 my way, please PM
anyone who objects to my nonprofit practices, stuff it

thank you very much
intrepidly, Jim Willie Classic Beemr

Voltaire, perhaps it is time to check Dell out again. I have a strong feeling the Dell train is about to power up again. Win2k sales are better than expected and Dell is well positioned in the business segment to capitalize on this. Soon the lemmings will flock back to the PC sector and Dell will soar. I also think their outside-the-box revenue will accelerate rapidly and become and increasing portion of their earnings (at higher margins).
IMHO, investors will take a closer look at Dell and be attracted by their high quality fundamentals. This includes a very attractive cash hoard which Dell is generating from operations (at almost 2x EPS).

:o)

Hi Voltaire,

Have been lurking here and on the Q and AOL threads for about a year. Would you happen to have an extra seat on the porch? Thanks to you I sold most of my AOL last fall and bought QCOM. Bought more Q @ 110, 113, 118 and 120. also own JDSU, BRCM, CSCO, ELON, ARBA, NTAP, SCMR, SEBL, ORCL and TERN. Approx. half my portfolio is the mighty Q. I decided to join SI and pony up the $200 after reading your post on CC writing. If you and the other porchmates wouldn't mind, I'd like to join in the discussion.

By the way, I'm down here in Florida (Orlando)and I know you are in the Atlanta Area. Have you ever been to the Highlands-Cashiers area in the N.C. Mountains? Go there every October when the leaves are turning to play golf as we get no fall color change here in Florida. We are seriously thinking of re-locating to that area soon. (need Q to double first-that's not too much to ask is it?)

Really do greatly appreciate your insights. You have really changed my thinking on this whole CC thing to get INCOME NOW with part of my assets. May write calls on JDSU on MON. SCMR has incredible call premiums right now because the stock is so volatile I suppose.

PEACE,
PinHi
