Steve, i would argue that the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic led to the rise of Hitler and from there to WW2.
apparently inflationary depressions are much more likely to lead to political extremists gaining the upper hand than deflationary ones. this may be due to the fact that deflation doesn't destroy the value of money as such.
sure, Roosevelt was also a radical of sorts, but he would not have instigated a war...although some argue that he was so keen on joining the action that he allowed the Pearl Harbor incident to take place in spite of a prior warning.
anyway, i agree that hard economic times are a fertile breeding ground for wars.
which is why one should watch very closely what China is doing...their threats re. Taiwan may be a lot more serious this time around than in the past.
