I was searching for something unrelated to LEDs and found this:

One of the more spectacular advances possible as a result of the unique properties of plastic conductors is the plastic light emitting diode (LED), a refinement of which Heeger announced last summer in the science magazine Nature. The plastic LED, while still in its infancy, holds out the promise of being far more flexible, in more ways than one, than the familiar, red-glowing semiconductor LED.

"In the light emitting diode, the really neat thing is that by using different polymers you can get different colors," commented Heeger. The plastic LED may lead to thin, flexible, multicolored strips that could be used to make such present-day impossibilities as room illuminating wallpaper, windows that turn transparent at the flick of a switch, or large, lightweight, flat-panel HDTV screens.

I'm not sure how easy it will be to able to get into the mass-market devices since they are so price sensitive. What is the cost difference between a blue LED and a green LED? I assume it is pretty significant

Oops....just found a mass-market phone (less than $200) that incorporates blue LED's, the Sanyo4000. I dont know if it has Cree LED's but at least it shows that blue LED's are a possability for ALL cell phones. The market is huge....probably around 270m in '99 and projections as high as 400m for 2000.
