Cisco's secret for success
By Phil Harvey

SAN FRANCISCO -- In the networking equipment space, the spoils will go to the nimble, regardless of size.

That's what Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) M & A wiz Mike Volpi told investors at the Thomas Weisel Partners' Emerging Networks conference this week. With a market capitalization approaching $500 billion, it's an understatement to say Cisco has found the formula for successful growth. But according to Mr. Volpi, Cisco's senior vice president of business development and alliances, that formula changes all the time, despite Cisco's 51 acquisitions in the past six and a half years. The adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't apply here.

Mr. Volpi, who looks like an extra in "Boiler Room," told investors here that the quickly moving market has forced Cisco to demonstrate unprecedented agility for a company its size just to keep from being left behind by competitors. The gluttonous company plans to keep binging, with potential buyout targets such as Corvis, Optical Networks, and Tenor Networks, analysts say.....

Congrats Mindmeld............Cisco is holding strong. Still a LONG time from now to July 31. I think you will be surprised at the strength of NT's next quarterly number. I would be surpries if they don't exceed analyst's forecast due to exploding optics demand.

Of course I still maintain that NT is in much better position to grow their market share on a going forward basis and we all agree that the growth will be in the Carrier/ASP/ISP/Internet/Wireless Public Network space not in the enterprise/on-premise router space.

Personally I see less downside and risk factor in NT versus CSCO as CSCO tries to remake their company in their drive to penetrate the public network space.

Well Mindmeld, it appears NT is very close to Cisco and catching up fast. This is a race that won't be so obvious until July I suspect!

But if you are holding both, it must be fun! I am loaded on NT for short & long haul as I see less downside and just as much upside (if not more) than Cisco.

Time will tell -- as always!
