Some of it is natural: words change according to usage. Still, some of it is laziness, and some of it, as in the drift of the term "enlightened", is at least deeply ironic, and reflects a decadent change in the culture, I think. Vigorous, healthy people believe things and act on their beliefs. It is a mark of decadence to pride yourself on seeing through everything, and on being too refined to pursue an agenda.......

Your opponents are going to pick apart your
words when there is nothing else to pick at
IMHO.

On a lighter note, I think it's futile to be
too concerned about our language considering
the following.

GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU

If GH can stand for P as in Hiccough
If OUGH stands for O as in Dough
If PHTH stands for T as in Phthisis
If EIGH stands for A as in Neighbour
If TTE stands for T as in Gazette
If EAU stands for O as in Plateau

The right way to spell POTATO should be:

GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU <ggg>
