All I have to say is that the consumer segment would have gone through significantly less churn if AMD has gone the 100MHz increment route since 800. The rapid introduction of speed grades that we are seeing now is not good for the industry. Look at at from channel perspective - how will the channel absorb 800/850/900/950/1000 in a span of 2 months (January 8th to March 8th - approximate dates). This would have been much smoother 800/900/1G if it had been done right.

Chuck,

I understand that you are proposing would have been better than what has happened. But even at 100MHz stepups, in my view the industry is moving to quickly.

Can AMD and Intel maintain the level of research required to keep the current rate of MHz/GHz upgrades? I don't think so. What did Moore say...every 18 mos...we're down to every 4-6 mos. When that stops, what happens to the consumer market. Are we cannibalizing future sales with this speed race? I don't know.

I just have a strong fear that a price will be paid for the current fast track that AMD and Intel are on.
