In that extreme case (it gapped by that far amount) shorting appears to be effectively forestalled for quite a time and at the premium prices once the market was open.

Until minutes before the open it was easily done, (for quite an amount of shares) by hitting various ecn bids... as you pointed out with a direct entry. At 9:14 it even showed a 10k best bid at 120 1/2.

Interestingly for a brief time after the market open, you have various trades at the ask, ahead of 116.5, also hitting the 117 ask on ISLD. This supports your idea that a direct entry at and over 116.5 would still have been hit.
