U.S. chip makers eye Korea comm market

Mar. 03, 2000 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) --
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - Qualcomm Inc. and Motorola Inc. are
moving to conquer the Korean market for high-speed voice and data
technology.

Industry watchers said San Diego-based Qualcomm and Motorola
(Schaumburg, Ill.) are focusing their efforts here on high-speed mobile
communications. Qualcomm's focus is high data rate (HDR),
high-speed data technologies operating at speeds as high as 2.4
Mbits/second while Motorola targets mobile applications at 460
kbits/s with its 1xPlus technology.

Both companies have licensing contracts with major Korean mobile
communications manufacturers. The names of the partners will be
disclosed later this year, the U.S. companies said.

Analysts said the demand here for mobile communications service
providers is fueling the move to Qualcomm's and Motorola's
technologies. These providers want to be seen as offering the best
technologies in advance of deployment of wireless technology based
on the IMT-2000 standard. Demand has also been boosted by the
recent boom in Internet-based data services.

Faster transmissions

Korean mobile-comm service providers have lately changed their IS95A service to faster
IS95B service with transmission speeds up to 64.6 kbits/s.

Qualcomm has licensed its HDR technology to domestic mobile communications handset
and service providers. The company is also studying whether to offer dedicated high-speed
services up to 2.4 Mbits/s.

Qualcomm also is considering investing in Korea Telecom Freetel Co., a mobile comm
service provider, and other communication companies.

Motorola has been upgrading Korean data services by promoting its 1xPlus technology
designed to support voice and data services simultaneously at speeds of 460 kbits/s.
