In addition to cable's issues with security and slowdowns due to shared bandwidth, the economics seems to favour the telcos as well.

Copper Mountain (a DSL player) claims that the cost to set up a DSL home user is $2.50 vs $300 for cable modem users. They also claim that with the DSL market growing at 200% per year, there's a lot of business to go around.
