Buckey,

If you have one extra PCI slot you are fine.

You need a PCI video card (say 8mb ATI xpert) approx $70 OEM
and you need to run win 98

That's it, no extra software.

Ask more..
Olga

Buckey - I run 3 monitors off 1 computer. U need win98, and a good quality motherboard, mine is an Asus P3B-F. I have an Asus6600 32Mb AGP card running a 19" Samsung900IFT, an ATI Expert128 16Mb PCI card running a 19" Hitachi 752, bot these monitors run at 1600x1200 resolution and are truly sensational. I also have another older PCI card running a Sumsung Syncmaster 17" Glsi monitor at 1152x864 (card won't go any higher) but it is also excellent. You want good qaulity video cards and monitors otherwise u end up with subliminal flicker which I find stressfull. U also want to run both monitors at the same resolution so things don't change in size and appearance when you drag from one screen to the other. I started this project late last year and I truly am absolutely delighted. My recommendation is to buy quality components. I am just waiting for another ATI expert128 to come in to replace my older PCI card. The 17" Samsung goes off to University and I will get another 19" Samsung 900IFT. I didn't like this monitor at first, but played around with the colour tone control and adjustments, so now it is as good as the Hitachi. I'm also going to 256Meg ram.

OT: Multi-monitors are easy to set up but you need Windows98. I run 3 monitors on one PC and 2 on another PC. Preferable you want the same monitors for consistency of resolution as you drag windows between monitors, but it's not a requirement. You also need more memory as you open more windows. The PCs here have 128MB RAM. The video cards should also be the same to avoid conflicts and again for consistency in viewing but not a requirement. Some different manufacturer drivers I have found will not coexist. Even using cards of different memory size of same manufacturer have potential configuration problems. With a lot of juggling you can make it work but more difficult. ATI cards are optimized for Windows98 multi-monitor setups. I use ATI 8MB Expert98 PCI cards driving NEC P1250+ 21" monitors at 1600 x 1200 resolution in both systems with excellent flicker free results. There is no advantage using an AGP card for this application. Go with highest quality monitors within the budget and match the cards to the monitors to minimize eye strain.
